Please, please, please, can somebody creative come up with:
- A better name for the generic project of developing the system that runs this site (currently "This Website Thing").
- A better name for the specific instantiation of that software to meet our immediate needs (currently "PMPG Library").
- Better labels for many of the things within the site (currently taken from Schema.org type/property names, which are far from intuitive).
My initial thinking was centred around cataloguing/managing/archiving already existing resources, so the term I was bandying about was "information clearinghouse," but it's since expanded to also encompass the pain points around collaboration and organising. The last thing I want to do is be responsible for the creation of yet more groupware, but I do think it's important to get people's daily lives out of "the cloud" and back onto systems that they own and control themselves, and which don't surveil their every click, scroll, and keypress.
That's why I like the library metaphor, because libraries are cool pieces of public infrastructure where information is managed and made accessible, and increasingly where people get together to collaborate together on all sorts of things.
Also librarians are sexy. Fact. I don't make the rules, I just try to abide by them.
